The Engineering Department, a Core Department of Electronic Toys Manufacturers

As we all known, the engineering department is most important department for a professional and powerful manufacturer. In this article, we’ll tell you why that is.

Engineers are among the most creative and talented individuals of society. Brimming with ideas, they have the power to influence decisions and turn their thoughts into real-life products. The actions of an engineering department can have a huge effect on the main manufacturer, more so than people may expect. If they have mastered the core technology, the rest of the company can conduct its own independent research and development of products. Additionally, core competitiveness largely depends on the engineers. In order to be an OEM & ODM enterprise, a manufacturer needs to have its own engineering department, featuring a team of experienced designers.

So, let’s take a look at the main responsibilities of the engineering department, as well as studying their processes, in order to understand a little more about this section. And, we’ll be able to identify its true importance.

Let’s begin with the department’s working process:

Firstly, the customer will provide an idea to the engineer, perhaps even a 2D drawing. Then, this engineer will work to produce a 3D drawing, using 3D modelling designs. The circuit board makes the sample, including both the appearance and function sample. This sample will be submitted to the quality department, where it will be inspected thoroughly. Once the customer signs the sample, a BOM form will be sent to purchase raw materials.

Take a look at the diagram below to understand the process in more detail.

There are four noteworthy points that we can take away from this.

1.The relevant restrictions of exporting countries should be considered in this design process.

The 3D modelling and PCB design process, for example, should be taken into full consideration. Some exporting countries impose restrictions on relevant products, which can prove to be an issue. Mobile phone is a good example to prove this point. The Apple iPhone, specifically. If you visited to China before, you must find the volume of mobile phones produced is extremely much louder than iPhone. This is not the case in the United States or Europe, however. In restricting countries, the decibel level of mobile phones is strictly controlled, to avoid noise pollution caused by excessive noise. This means that designing engineers must pay attention to this regulation, in order to meet customer requirements.

2.It can take a long time from the point of design to mass production.

Once the engineer’s designs come out, the quality department will strictly regulate the quality. They’ll confirm the quality of samples via a series of tests, including the aging test, drop test, salt spray test, and tension and torque test. The results are fed back to the engineer for modification if needs be. Additionally, it will take time for the engineer to send the sample to the customer for confirmation. And, once the customer responds, any dissatisfaction needs to be handled and the product will be modified. So, as you can tell, this process is relatively lengthy.

3.The engineering department has the capacity to provide support to other departments.

So that the quality of products is controlled and high-quality products are produced with high-efficiency, the engineering department should provide the SOP to the production department, as well as training the workers. This will ensure that there is no problem in the production and assembly process, and the end results will be delivered with high quality.

4.OEM & ODM

At the beginning of this article, we mentioned that an enterprise doing OEM & ODM should own an engineering department and a team of experienced design engineers. Why is this, you may wonder?

Well, firstly, if you are looking for a professional OEM & ODM manufacturer, the first department you’ll approach is that of the engineers. Secondly, customers will put forward their own needs, including product style, functional requirements and packaging, for example. Engineers assess the feasibility of the project and the ability to develop new products.

So, have you learnt a little more about the engineering department? And, would you agree with us that the engineering department is the core of a professional manufacturer?
